One more luxury car and the same time sport sedan, named 2016 Lexus IS. The current IS has been launched back in 2013 with a new look and a new interior over the previous generation. However, its engines as well as most of the running gear are nearly identical to those of the previous generation which has been more than 10 years old now.

In order to solve some of these problems and make the IS a better car, Lexus decided that this might be the perfect time for an upgrade to their 2 year old model. The 2016 Lexus IS has been launched nearly two months ago in Europe and it is expected to be released on the US market and in the other parts of the World by the end of this year.

Under its hood Toyota and Lexus did a lot of work so the 2016 Lexus IS is the second model to come on the market with the all new 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine. This completely replaces the old 2.5 liter V6 which was not really all that powerful or efficient. The new engine on the other hand offers 241 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque which is nearly 25% better than before and just as good as the previous two-wheel drive 3.5 liter V6 model. This new engine is only mated to an 8 speed automatic and it can be had only with rear wheel drive.

Lexus said that the all wheel drive version of the car will make use of a more powerful turbocharged inline 4 which could hit up to 300 horsepower, thus making it one of the more powerful 2 liter engines in its class. The top of the range IS 350 with the 3.5 liter V6 on the other hand remained unchanged but it is likely to be replaced next year with a new V6 turbocharged mill that could finally be just as good as the turbocharged engines of its German competitors.[Show slideshow]

Inside the cabin, the 2016 Lexus IS also received quite a bit of care so it is now better equipped and it has even nicer materials. As standard it comes with dual zone climate control, leather wrapped seats, steering wheel and dashboard, a fully digital instrument cluster and even an LCD screen which acts as the control center for the infotainment unit. The drawback is that it offers slightly less space than its competitors due to the aging design of its chassis. The good part is that the suspension system has been revised in order to offer its passengers more comfort than before and the driver more control.

The exterior of the IS has been carried over unchanged since the 2013 model and this is to be expected, especially since it is one of the newer sedans launched on the market. The only difference is with the 200t model which now comes with a standard dual exhaust system with chromed tips rather than the hidden single exhaust of the older 2.5 V6 model.

The car features a revised running gear which should be not only safer than that of the previous model but also sportier. On top of that, a completely new engine has been added to the range as well as a new transmission choice. These should make it a better competitor for the new Jaguar XE and all the other European executive sedans which were previously trumping the IS in every possible way.

The new model, 2016 Lexus IS is expected to cost a bit more than the 2013 model meaning that the base car could now cost around $40,000 which is a $3,000 increase. While it may not seem like much, at this price point the IS is nearly $7,000 more than some of its competitors which means that it does have a lot to prove in order to be even considered by some buyers.
